There is an appealing story to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the border from nearby Thailand, in which casino betting is against the law. Eight casinos are established in a relatively small location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect spot, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of limitations requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; however, financing sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 1700, and even though visas are supposedly needed to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is accurate of many borders.
The original Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked ship gambling hall, contains 150 slots and sixty tables. The Naga river boat is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are 150 one armed bandits and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred one armed bandits and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the normal tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel complex that highlights numerous conveniences accompanying the gambling den, which offers ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slot machines and eighty eight table games.
